Accessibility

What this site does to be usable by everyone, how I check it, and where the limits are.

What the site does

  • Keyboard first. A skip link jumps straight to the content, every link and button shows a clear focus ring, and the orb on the home page is a real button you can turn on with Enter or Space.
  • Calm motion. If your system asks for reduced motion, the fade-ins, the drifting orb, and the page-to-page transitions all switch off.
  • Light, dark, and high contrast. Colors follow your system's light or dark setting. If it asks for more contrast, the site switches to plain black and white with underlined links. You can also turn that on with the "High contrast" link in the footer, which only changes the address (#contrast); nothing is saved.
  • Works without JavaScript. Every page reads fine with scripts off. The search page shows its full list, and the toggle still works through the address.
  • Clear structure. One main heading per page, labeled navigation that marks the page you're on, landmarks for the header, main content, and footer, and the page language set to English.
  • Readable text. Text stays legible on phones and scales with your browser zoom, lines are kept short, and color contrast passes automated WCAG AA checks in both color schemes.

How I check it

  • Every deploy, each page gets an automated Lighthouse audit on a simulated phone, and accessibility has to score 100 before I call it done. The changelog lists each version.
  • I run a small keyboard test on the orb and check the skip link, the current-page marker, and the browser console on the live pages.
  • I take screenshots in light and dark mode, on desktop and phone sizes, and look at them.

What I can't promise yet

Automated checks catch a lot, but not everything. I haven't yet tested the site by hand with a screen reader, or with people who rely on one, so there may be rough edges I don't know about. Small icons and sparkle glyphs are decorative and hidden from assistive technology; if anything decorative ever gets in the way, that's a bug.

This page describes the site as it is on the date in the footer. When something changes, the changelog will say so.
